#196: Culture Club for 80s Retro

Culture Club New York Get ready, we’re going Back to the Future at Culture Club.

As a die hard 80s fan, I’ve been itching to hit Culture Club  in Midtown and I have no idea why it took me so long to get here. Step inside this neon 80s fun fest and you’ll be overwhelmed by cheese…and I love it. Surrounded by glow in the dark paint on the walls to the likes of classic Pac Man, Mario, Pretty in Pink and Ferris Bueller…they even have a Delorian hanging on the wall. Rubix Cube tables, a light-up dance floor and a wall that screams “Everyone Wang Chung Tonight” – what more do you need?

Step up to the bar and order the special kitschy Culture Club cocktails like the Bon Jovi, The Top Gun (‘Feel the need for speed’ a vodka and energy drink no doubt), Gibson Girl (named after Ms. Debbie), Smurf-arita (blue of course), Madonna, Purple Rain (The drink formerly known as…) or Wall Street (‘Greed is good’). But at $15 a pop, I’d stick to the beer.

Culture Club New YorkAnd can we say an interesting crowd. You’ve got your after work suits, your bachelorettes, your 20 somethings in spandex pretending to know what the 80s are (screw with them and ask them what a cassette tape and acid wash are), your cougars in spandex trying to look like 20-somethings and your 50 year olds that have been there, done that and want to relive it again.

Take a walk around this whole place as its huge at 25,000 square feet and 4 floors. But here’s the disappointing part. I went on a Friday which had no cover, only the first floor was happening, and even more disappointing, they were playing Top 40 and threw in an 80s hit every half hour.  Apparently if you go on a Saturday, there’s a dedicated 80s floor but you’ll pay a stiff $25 cover charge to get in.

I loved the look and idea of Culture Club, but what’s the point of going to an 80s bar if they’re going to play 80s music. In the immortal words of Mr. Lionel Richie please play it  ’All Night Long”.
